Frequently Asked Questions

GENERAL

Couples therapy is a type of counseling designed to help partners improve their relationship, resolve conflicts, and strengthen their bond.

Sex therapy can address sexual dysfunctions, improve communication about sex, and enhance intimacy between partners.

Addresses a range of sexual and gender-related concerns, including but not limited to: erectile dysfunction, premature ejaculation, orgasm difficulties, painful intercourse, differences in sexual desire between partners, questioning sexuality, gender dysphoria, coming out experiences, sexual trauma, sexual compulsivity, shame, and performance anxiety.

Individual therapy focuses on personal issues, helping you to understand yourself better, develop coping strategies, and achieve personal goals.

Absolutely. Ensuring your privacy and confidentiality is a top priority in all therapy sessions.

Couples Intensives

How do we know if a marriage intensive is right for us?

Couples intensives can benefit relationships at various stages, from those in crisis to those seeking enhancement. During your initial consultation, I will help determine if this approach aligns with your specific needs and goals.

It’s common for one spouse to feel more hesitant about intensive therapy. I welcome these concerns and can address them during the consultation. Often, the resistant partner finds the intensive format more productive and engaging than they anticipated.

Preparation includes completing assessment materials, arranging childcare and work schedules, and mentally preparing for focused relationship work. I provide specific guidance to help you make the most of your intensive experience.

Yes, sexual intimacy concerns are commonly addressed during couples intensives. I provide a sex-positive approach that respects your comfort levels while exploring barriers to satisfying connection.

Most couples report feeling hopeful and equipped with new tools after completing the intensive program. While every relationship is unique, the intensive format is designed to inspire hope and provide tangible strategies for continued growth.

SEX THERAPY

Is sex therapy only for couples?

No, sex therapy benefits individuals as well as couples. Many clients seek individual therapy to address personal sexual concerns, including anxiety, trauma recovery, and sexuality issues.

The duration varies depending on your specific concerns and goals. Some clients see significant improvement in 8-12 sessions, while others benefit from longer-term therapy. I’ll discuss timeline expectations during your initial consultation.

Sex therapy is talk therapy that involves discussing your concerns, learning new communication skills, exploring emotional patterns, and developing strategies to address specific issues. I may assign exercises to practice between sessions, but there is never any sexual activity during therapy.

Absolutely. Like all forms of therapy, sex therapy is bound by strict confidentiality laws and ethical guidelines. Your privacy is protected, with exceptions only in situations mandated by law.

If you’re experiencing distress or dissatisfaction related to sexuality or intimacy, sex therapy may be helpful. An initial consultation can help determine if my approach suits your needs or if another form of support would be more beneficial.

Coverage varies by provider and policy. Sex therapy is typically covered when provided by a licensed marriage and family therapist or other qualified mental health professional for diagnosed conditions. I can help you understand your insurance benefits and options.

EMDR THERAPY

How many EMDR sessions will I need?

The number of sessions varies based on the nature and extent of traumatic experiences, your treatment goals, and whether you’re addressing single or multiple traumas. Simple traumas may resolve in 3-5 sessions of processing, while complex trauma typically requires longer treatment.

EMDR involves activating disturbing memories, which can temporarily increase distress. However, you remain aware of being in the present moment, I teach coping skills before beginning processing, and the distress typically diminishes rapidly during sessions. Most clients find the temporary discomfort well worth the relief that follows.

Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR focuses on processing memories rather than just discussing them, uses bilateral stimulation to facilitate neural processing, often produces more rapid results for trauma and anxiety, and works directly with the body’s natural healing systems.

Research consistently shows EMDR therapy is one of the most effective treatments for PTSD, with success rates comparable to or exceeding other trauma-focused therapies. EMDR is recognized as an evidence-based treatment by major health organizations worldwide.

Emotionally Focused Therapy

How is Emotionally Focused Therapy different from other approaches?

Unlike therapy focused primarily on communication skills or problem-solving, EFT addresses the underlying emotional bonds that drive relationship dynamics. By working with these attachment needs rather than just behavioral symptoms, EFT creates deeper, more lasting change.

Most couples attend 8-20 sessions, with significant improvements often visible within 8-12 sessions. Complex issues or relationships with trauma history may require additional time.

Some insurance plans cover couples therapy with specific diagnoses. I can provide documentation for out-of-network benefits, but many clients find my services worth the investment for lasting relationship improvement.

While Emotionally Focused Therapy works best with both partners present, I sometimes conduct individual sessions to address specific issues. However, the core work happens when couples engage in the process together.

Many partners are initially hesitant about therapy. I’m happy to address concerns in an initial consultation, and many reluctant partners become engaged once they experience my non-judgmental, balanced approach.

THERAPY GROUPS

How long do therapy groups run?

Most of my therapy groups for sexless relationships run for 8-12 weeks, meeting weekly for 90-minute sessions. I also offer ongoing groups that provide continuous support for those who benefit from longer-term engagement.

Individual growth often catalyzes positive relationship changes. Many clients begin with individual groups and find their partners become more open to participation after seeing positive changes.

Confidentiality is paramount in my groups. All participants agree to strict privacy guidelines, and I create an environment where you control what and how much you share.

Absolutely. I am knowledgeable about diverse sexual orientations and gender identities and provide affirming care for all couples.

Research shows online therapy can be equally effective for many relationship concerns. My virtual groups maintain the same structure and standards while offering additional convenience.

PArenting groups

What types of parenting challenges do your groups address?

My parenting groups address a wide range of family challenges including co-parenting conflicts after separation or divorce, blending families with stepchildren, supporting children through anxiety, managing grief and trauma, improving communication between family members, setting consistent boundaries, and navigating major life transitions. I offer specialized groups for different situations, so you’ll be connected with other parents facing similar challenges to yours.

Group therapy provides the unique benefit of connecting with other parents who truly understand your struggles, reducing feelings of isolation while offering multiple perspectives on common challenges. You’ll receive my professional guidance as a licensed family therapist combined with peer support and shared experiences. Group therapy is also more cost-effective than individual sessions while still providing evidence-based strategies and practical tools you can implement immediately at home.

Absolutely. I maintain strict confidentiality standards in all my groups, and all participants agree to confidentiality guidelines before joining. I create a safe, non-judgmental environment where parents feel comfortable sharing their challenges. Many parents find tremendous relief discovering they’re not alone in their struggles, and the supportive community that develops often becomes one of the most valuable aspects of the group experience.

Group length varies depending on the specific type of group and your family’s needs. Most groups meet weekly for a set number of sessions, typically ranging from 6-12 weeks. Each session is structured to include educational components, group discussion, and practical skill-building exercises. I also provide assignments to help you apply what you’ve learned at home between sessions, which enhances the therapeutic process and accelerates positive changes in your family dynamics.

I’m a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapy Associate (LMFT-A) with extensive training and experience in family systems, child development, and group therapy facilitation. My specialized expertise includes trauma-informed care, play therapy techniques, and evidence-based approaches to family counseling. I create therapeutic environments where families receive professional guidance tailored to their unique needs while ensuring each session benefits from my deep understanding of family dynamics and effective parenting strategies.
